Peterborough Petes hosting mental health awareness game

The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R.) has partnered with the Peterborough Petes for a mental health awareness game on Thursday, Feb. 27, presented by Teachers Life, as the Petes take on the Oshawa Generals at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Attendees of the game can visit a C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. kiosk on the concourse to learn more about mental health and our community-based services and participate in a ‘Mystery Puck’ contest. There will also be a ceremonial puck drop, videos featuring Petes players talking about the importance of mental health and the public service announcements about C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. and mental health.

This mental health awareness game is part of the Petes’ ongoing partnership with C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. and its Talk Today program, presented by Teachers Life. Originally launched by C.M.H.A. Ontario in partnership with the Ontario Hockey League in 2014, Talk Today provides an important opportunity to address the mental health needs of athletes across Canada. The program was initiated in Peterborough between C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. and the Petes. Through this program, over 1,100 OHL players and over 400 coaches, billets and staff have received mental health and suicide prevention training across the league.

The key piece of the Talk Today program has been to educate players about mental health and suicide prevention. Each team is also linked to a CMHA mental health coach, who provides support and mental health resources to individuals in need. Additionally, C.M.H.A. experts work with players from the Peterborough Petes to deliver a basic in-class presentation about mental wellness to elementary school students.
