Release Subject:          8-Hour Ski Relay by Wild Rock and Kawartha Nordic

Date:                               January 22nd, 2023

Location:                       Kawartha Nordic Ski Club, 7107 Highway 28, North Kawartha, ON

The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) is pleased to announce that Wild Rock Outfitters Peterborough, in collaboration with Kawartha Nordic Ski Club, will be hosting an 8-Hour Ski Relay for Mental Health on Sunday, January 22nd at Kawartha Nordic Ski Club. The event will run 8-hours, with the opening ceremonies happening at 10:00 a.m. and skiing ending at 6:00 p.m.

The funds from the Ski Relay will support CMHA HKPR’s Garden Homes Project through the Supportive Housing program. The Garden Homes project aims to support vulnerable individuals who are at risk of homelessness in the Peterborough area by providing affordable, small homes. Through the project, CMHA HKPR will be creating small, custom-built housing for individuals or small families within Peterborough. This project is one of the first of its kind in the region and we hope to pave the way for similar projects and more affordable housing in the future.

“Much of our community has been challenged with access to affordable housing. Through the support of this fundraiser, we hope to develop creative solutions to a highly complex issue in our region,” says Mark Graham, Chief Executive Officer.  “With low vacancy rates and many people facing homelessness, this initiative is needed now more than ever.”

“As a worker in Peterborough’s downtown, I walk from my home in East City on my commute to work and have seen the struggles of people experiencing homelessness. The Garden Homes Project will be a step forward in addressing the housing crisis in the area,” says John Hauser, organizer of the ski relay.  “The relay seemed to be a great way to bring community together to raise funds for this much needed cause.”

There are still spots available and skiers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in this fun recreational event with food, music, and games. You can register as an individual or as a team; or donate to the cause here:  https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/canadian-mental-health-association-haliburton-kawartha-pine-ridge-branch/p2p/ski/.
