Nearly $20,000 raised in support of suicide prevention and YES Shelter
Nov 21, 2018
With the generous support of participants, sponsors and the community as a whole, the third annual Merrett Home Hardware Run for Mental Health, held this past September, raised nearly $20,000 in support of suicide prevention and the YES Shelter.
The Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R.) would like to thank everyone who played a role in the success of the event, which raised a total of $19,026.93. Of the total, 10 per cent is directed to the YES Shelter while the remainder is invested in the C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. Assertive Outreach for Suicide Prevention (A.O.S.P.) program.
Since 2016, this event has raised more than $50,000 to support the funding of a Family Education Support Worker as part of the A.O.S.P. program.
While all teams and individual participants are greatly appreciated, C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. would like to offer a special note of gratitude to Team Brett, a team established in memory of a young man from the area who died by suicide. In his honour, Brett’s family and friends raised nearly $2500 for the cause.
According to the Team Brett race page, while Brett’s family is still living with grief and unanswered questions, they are committed to raising money through Brett’s story to help others that fight with depression and mental illness.
“On behalf of C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R., I want to thank Brett’s family for taking the tragedy of losing their loved one and using it to help others in our own community,” says Jack Veitch, Manager of Community Engagement and Education.
“With their generous support, and the support of everyone else who was involved in the Run for Mental Health, we will be able to work with more individuals who have attempted suicide, as well as their families. Team Brett and all supporters are, in a very real way, helping save lives in Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge.”
In addition to our generous title sponsor, Merrett Home Hardware Building Centre, C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. would like to thank Runner’s Life for hosting the event as well as all of the event’s sponsors:
