Subject: World Suicide Prevention Day 2024: Changing the Narrative on Suicide
Date: Tuesday, September 10, 2024
The Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) reminds us that September 10th marks World Suicide Prevention Day, an important international event aimed at raising awareness about suicide prevention and reducing stigma around mental health issues.
This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” encourages Canadians to start conversations about mental health and suicide. The call to action “Start the Conversation” emphasizes the importance of breaking down barriers and fostering open discussions about this complex issue.
Suicide remains a major public health challenge in Canada, claiming approximately 12 lives every day or 4500 people per year. Each suicide has far-reaching consequences that affect individuals, families, and communities across our country.
Key points/events:
- 840,000 people in Canada reported having serious thoughts of suicide in 2023.
- There were approximately 20,000 hospitalizations due to self-harm in Canada in 2023.
- The 9-8-8 National Suicide Crisis Helpline provides free, confidential emotional support 24/7 across Canada. Anyone in crisis or distress can call or text 9-8-8 for immediate assistance.
- Community Care Hospice will be hosting an event in memory of those who died by suicide at the Old Mill Park Picnic Shelter in Lindsay at 2:00 PM on September 10. All are welcome to attend.
