Checking In, Not Just Coaching On
This course equips youth sports coaches with the skills and confidence to support the mental well-being of the athletes they work with. While coaches are not expected to be mental health professionals, they play a critical frontline role in creating safe, supportive environments and recognizing when something may be wrong.
This session focuses on practical, real-world strategies to help coaches communicate effectively, build trust with athletes, and identify early signs that a young person may be struggling. Participants will learn how to start supportive conversations, respond in a calm and appropriate way, and understand when and how to connect athletes with additional supports, including parents and professionals.
The course also clarifies the important boundaries between a coach’s role and that of a parent or mental health provider, ensuring coaches feel confident in what they should and should not do. Designed specifically for youth sports coaches at all levels, this training is ideal for anyone working directly with young athletes who wants to foster a positive team culture while supporting both performance and overall well-being.
