Achievement Through Adversity Award
This award, presented annually at the Annual Meeting honours a consumer/survivor who has shown continued courage and tenacity in reaching their goals. In education, employment, volunteering or through the tasks of daily living, this consumer/survivor is a role model for other survivors on the journey to a healthy life.
Maurice Lovnes Volunteer Award
The Maurice Lovnes Award is presented by the Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) each year at the Annual Meeting to an individual or individuals who have volunteered with the Canadian Mental Health Association HKPR, and who have exemplified during the year; Vision, Dedication, Caring, Support and Commitment.
Caregiver Champion Award For Family Members
This award, presented annually at our Annual Meeting, honours a family member/caregiver who has shown continued support to another family member living with mental health issues.
Naresh James Champion of Mental Health Award
This award recognizes an individual who has championed critical issues, pioneered initiatives and who has achieved lasting impacts in support of those who live with mental health issues, as well as assisting their families and friends. This individual has demonstrated commitment to support individuals who live with mental health issues through their leadership, advocacy, and perseverance.
CMHA HKPR Champion of Mental Health Award
Commencing in 2013 CMHA Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge will acknowledge individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions in the community. These contributions should support Knowledge, Hope and Belonging, the three pillars that forms the foundation of our organization to enable Mental Health for All.
Tam Grant Memorial Bursary
The Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch and the Grant Family Estate present the Tam Grant Memorial Bursary. Access to educational programs is one way for individuals living with schizophrenia or other serious and persistent mental illness to realize their own potential. The Tam Grant Memorial Bursary seeks to encourage and support these individuals as they pursue a higher education.

Donations to the Tam Grant Bursary:
Financial donations either personal or in memory of loved ones to the Tam Grant Memorial Bursary Fund are always much appreciated. Donations can be received either by cash, cheque, Visa or MasterCard. You will receive a charitable tax receipt for your contribution.

About Tam Grant:
Tam was the son of the late Bill Grant, a local lawyer and municipal politician and his wife Margaret. He was a good student and popular with his peers. Tam played both hockey and basketball in high school and was active in Sea Scouts. Like his parents, Tam also enjoyed raising horses which was an intense family activity for many years. Curling and photography were the other two passions that rounded out this bright, funny and very musical individual.
Unfortunately during Tam’s first year of university, he encountered problems dealing with the stress of exams. He took a year off and then went on to attend another university to see if the change would make a difference. The problems however continued. Tam then decided to work and travel but after an extended trip to Mexico, he returned home more troubled than ever. Over the next several years, Tam would be in and out of treatment and was eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia.
A lack of community supports at the time frustrated both Bill and Margaret. Finally after years of struggling with his illness, Tam died by suicide in 1977 at the age of 32.
It is for this reason that a bursary has been created to assist young people living with schizophrenia and/or other serious and persistent mental illness to pursue post secondary educational opportunities.
Bursary Details:
Value:
The maximum amount awarded is $1000.00.
Duration:
Bursaries are awarded twice a year for Fall and Spring registration at a post secondary institution.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for consideration for the bursary, applicants must:
- Be diagnosed with schizophrenia (individuals with other serious and persistent mental illnesses will also be considered)
- Be receiving medical treatment for their illness
- Submit a completed application package by both the applicant and a signed physician release form
- Reside in the Haliburton, Kawartha, or Pine Ridge district
Eligibility programs include:
- High school equivalency programs
- Community College, Trade or Vocational Programs
- Bachelor or Graduate degrees
- Credited home study courses
The award is sent to the recipient upon receiving receipted eligible expenses or directly to the educational institution.
Administration:
The program is administered by the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge Branch.

What does the bursary cover:
Money from the bursary can be used for tuition/registration fees, books and other costs related to completing a post secondary education and/or training program.
