Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. Although ASIST is widely used by healthcare providers, participants don’t need any formal training to attend the workshop—anyone 18 or older can learn and use the ASIST model.
During this workshop, ASIST participants engage in a comprehensive learning experience focused on suicide prevention. Participants learn to provide adaptable guidance to those experiencing suicidal thoughts, identifying essential elements for a safety plan. Through interactive training, they master the techniques needed to offer suicide first aid effectively. The workshop emphasizes the importance of community collaboration in enhancing resources for suicide prevention. Ultimately, ASIST trainees gain a holistic understanding of suicide prevention, recognizing it extends beyond intervention to encompass life promotion and self-care for both those at risk and their caregivers. This multifaceted approach equips participants with the knowledge and confidence to address suicide-related concerns in their communities.
