C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. celebrates National Indigenous Peoples Day

This Sunday, June 21, is National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day for all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Although these groups share many similarities, they each have their own distinct heritage, language, cultural practices and spiritual beliefs.

Alongside Indigenous organizations, the Government of Canada chose June 21, the summer solstice, for National Aboriginal Day, now known as National Indigenous Peoples Day. For generations, many Indigenous peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near this day due to the significance of the summer solstice as the longest day of the year.

Not only on June 21, but every day, the Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge commits to a journey of learning, healing and reconciliation to address the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. One of the calls to action is an inquiry into the causes of and remedies for the disproportionate victimization of Indigenous women and girls in Canada. To learn more about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, read “Reclaiming Power and Place: The Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls,” from the National Inquiry into MMIWG at www.mmiwg-ffada.ca.

Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19, there will be no public gatherings this year to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day, however, C.M.H.A. H.K.P.R. encourages individuals to join the virtual Summer Solstice Indigenous Festival at www.ottawafestivals.ca/event/summer-solstice-indigenous-festival/ or to take in Indigenous heritage, art, culture and history.
