Mental Performance Strategies for Youth Sports
This course is designed to help coaches of youth athletes understand and apply mental performance strategies that support both athletic growth and overall well-being. Based on principles from sports psychology and positive psychology, it explores how confidence, focus, mindset, and emotional regulation influence performance in practices and games. It highlights that mental skills are just as important as physical skills, especially for young athletes who are developing resilience and self-confidence. Participants will learn practical techniques that can be easily integrated into daily coaching. These include goal setting to encourage effort and progress, visualization to support skill development, positive self-talk to strengthen confidence, and breathing exercises to manage stress and improve focus. The course also explains how pressure can impact decision-making and performance, and provides tools to help athletes reset and regain control.
The intended audience is primarily coaches working with youth in recreational or competitive sport, though the content can also benefit athletes and sport leaders. The goal is to help coaches build environments where athletes feel supported, motivated, and confident. By the end of the course, participants will be able to explain how mental skills affect performance, apply simple strategies in coaching, support athlete mental health, and help athletes respond effectively to pressure and mistakes.
